Since 1 January 2023, a major reform has taken place: all packaging waste can now be placed in the “bac jaune“, or yellow recycling bin, across the country. This includes all plastic packaging (not just bottles), cardboard, paper, and metal packaging. The system aims to increase participation in recycling efforts.

While the rules are unified at the national level, the color of the bins may vary depending on the municipality or département. Here’s what you need to know:

    • Food scraps
